Croydon has flourish in recent years, being the largest office and retail centre in the south-east of England and outside of central London. Much of the area lies in the Fairfields and Addiscombe wards, which are part of the central constituency of Croydon. The remainder of the town is in Croham ward, and is part of Croydon South. These wards are within the local authority of Croydon. The area forms part of the London constituency. The police service manned by the Metropolitan Police personnel. The town of Croydon is placed about 10 miles to the south of London, It is situated 15.3 km south of Charing Cross at the head of River Wandle and just north of the North Downs. The name is believed to mean either 'crooked valley' or 'saffron valley'. Croydon area is one of 11 metropolitan centres in the greater London area. Croydon is historically part of Surrey. Croydon was then joined into Greater London during 1965. The road traffic is now a days directed away from a mainly pedestrian's town centre, but the main rail station, East Croydon, is a major hub within the rail transport system. The town is having its urban planning changed as part of Croydon Vision 2020. Croydon Airport, was first opened in 1915 and was initially used as a military airfield. During 1921 the airport was the first in the world to introduce air traffic control.
